Dear Holly,
The human obsession with hair removal dates back to the Stone Age when Neanderthal man began pulling hair from his body. You’ll find that through time the methods of hair removal, as well as the parts of the body from which humans removed their hair, has changed and evolved almost as frequently as fashionable footwear. In the Elizabethan era it was common for women of fashion to pluck or shave all the hair from their forehead and eyebrow area. Much later, in the 1970s and '80s, the rising popularity of pornography and the very visible view of many a porn star’s underside led to the growing trend of a clean-shaven pubic region. Stars like Marilyn Chambers (Behind the Green Door) pioneered the way from bushy to squeaky clean and set off a new hair removal obsession that has followed us into the 21st century.
Although the anus is tucked quite safely away between the nether regions of the butt cheeks, hair can grow there the same as anywhere else on the body. If you are hell-bent on having a clean-shaven anus I’d suggest using the same depilatory method that works on your other delicate parts (namely your bikini region and armpits). If you are accustomed to waxing, have your aesthetician do a full wax from asshole to mons. If your preferred method is shaving, believe it or not a razor to the perineum and pucker hole works just fine, just lather up, spread open and be careful not to nick yourself. I’ve also heard of people using hair removers like Nair with much success back there (although make sure you aren’t sensitive to the product first by testing it out on your legs or arms).
According to Salon.com the Porn Stars' preferred method for removing pubic hair is the disposable razor. They interviewed four porn stars, including Nina Hartley and Gina Rome, and “All four agreed that the porn starlets' secret is No Secret At All. They all shave with razors. All four insist that they have never tweezed, waxed, sugared, used depilatories or submitted to electrolysis.” Another interesting tidbit of information is that the stars use Visine to remedy razor bumps. The product Tend-Skin also does a good job with this.
But before you go forth on your quest to remove yet another bit of body hair you may want to ask yourself the following question: what is my motivation? Porn stars have a clean shaven bum simply because they have a camera lens focused in on that area full-time. Some women consider the anus to be an extension of the pubic region and don’t consider the job done until all the hair has been removed. Others maintain that it helps increase the pleasure of anal sex or analingus. Whatever your reason, be sure that you are taking on this grooming process for you, and not because your husband compared your slightly hairy butt hole to that of his ex girlfriend’s who never in her life sprouted a hair in that region.
