About the author
Spiral is the alter ego of an established illustrator. A place for him to breathe free of the commercial arena and create a world rich in personal language populated with characters discarded by society and of course his muse.
At any one time spiral is working an various bodies of work including a landscape project and a still life series but the pseudonym was created primarily for his dark erotic creations. The images from the series with the working title 'muse' comprise freeform social observation and obsessive collecting of the characters and objects that surround his muse. Each image is an individual that starts life scribbled in sketchbooks, spiral makes no attempt to limit the language to any one theme it is just a commentary of his thoughts and this unlimited approach to photomontage throws up unexpected juxtapositions creating dreamlike surreal scenes full of symbolism and personal language.
He likes to have a strong sense of narrative but with a twist of ambiguity, he knows what the images are about but likes the viewer to read into them their own personal stories and to lay their own meanings over what he may have originally intended. Something you can keep going back to and finding new things woven into each erotic manifestation.
The real basic premise of the muse series was to return to what first attracted me to image making when I was a child, the ability to get lost in an image.
Spiral also creates bespoke artwork for his collectors, From portraits to commissioned wall art.
