My Own Darkness

We made music together-
a fierce flow of liquid into words into unbearable sound
and again, like we’d forget how;
but I had a secret
and played you against it
my pen inspired by how I performed for you,
how wet your words made me
how shocked I was at my own darkness.
I wandered in and out of your body,
pulled you into mine
until I couldn’t think anymore.
How sweet the incense of holy burning skin
rising, as I took you against the kitchen sink that night
how the darkness echoed with blue
the color weaving itself into my thoughts
forming rivers when it moves
and suddenly I’m spread
attached again to your body
I’ll have to invent a new color
to forget.
